Evaluation Question 3- Tasha Reynolds

For part of my audience feedback I made a
survey asking our target audience some
questions about our short film.

Question 3: What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Our target audience are both males and females aged 17-25 years of age. When planning our short film and poster we constantly made sure that each component of the products were designed to appeal and engage to our target audience.  Through applying continuous research into what our target audience thoughts and opinions were we were able to achieve a successful short film and poster.

This feedback was helpful in reassuring that our storyline was clear and understandable as we were worried that the storyline may be too confusing therefore leading to a poor review and outcome.

Four out of five responses say that they thought the two characters are "best friends" or "close friends". This informed me that the fact they are sisters is not very clear. However, they all agreed that they are very close and have a strong bond. This suggests that the closeness and reliance towards each other was successful in establishing the type of relationship they have.

These comments were very helpful in seeing if the concept of being relatable and sympathised with were felt from the audience or not. This was rewarding feedback to hear as we were successful in achieving this as the majority of the feedback felt sympathetic towards her or came to the conclusion that Amy was "lost" without her sister. Some people even positioned themselves in the characters shoes confirming that the character is relatable.

Our main goal in terms of the plot twist was that we wanted it to come as a shock to the viewers. From analysing the feedback given I feel that we could have improved on making the 'shock factor' more surprising as quite a few responses said that it was "obvious".

The feedback from this question about the design of the film title was very helpful in helping us to decide whether or not we should use it on one of our final film posters as well. As a result of the positive feedback about its style, it pushed forward our theory to use it on the poster and as a result the film and poster help maintain the successful branding and promotion of our product.

During the stage of editing our film I really wanted to pursue and make obvious the idea of dissociation and isolation that the main protagonist is victim too. So this feedback was crucial in knowing it was made clear or not.

Dissociation: Involves detachment from reality. In psychology it varies from mild detachment from immediate surroundings/severe detachment from physical and emotional experience. It’s regarded as a coping mechanism to tolerate stress or conflict.

The results show from this bar graph that we portrayed the concept of bullying effectively. Which is an important issue we wanted to cover in our film as part of the fil genre Social Realism.

Although the overall outcome was good, it made me learn that to portray this issue in a more obvious and serious way we would have to include it in the film for longer and in different forms.

This suggests that the majority of the scenes were liked by the audience.

These responses were very helpful as we gained a good overview of our success rate.

This informs us that we selected the right type of genre to label our film with.

Audience Feedback on Poster:

What I learnt from Sophie's AF:
  • The photo that I chose to use fits the standard conventions of short film posters
  • The colours are "eye catching" which is something that I wanted to be predominant in the poster as the colour and lighting helps set the mood.
  • The dress code may have ruined the emotion of the poster as it looks a bit staged.

What I've learnt from Niamh's feedback:
  1. Niamh stated that our poster meets the requirements for a short film poster, as the title is clear and dominant.
  2. She also stated that the best part of the poster is the image as it is taken in a setting based in Brighton, also adding that the colours standout well. This reinforced my ideology about how the colours and lighting set the atmosphere in the poster.
  3. To improve she told me that I should add a rating system in so this could be in the form of a star symbols. In my previous drafts I has done this but thought that the quotes by the critics were more professional.
  4. She reinforced our beliefs about maintaining the link between the film and poster, as she stated "because the girls are placed in the centre of the frame, making them the main subject matter at a recognisable location."
  5. When I asked her about the font of the title she said "It appears as handwritten like a letter or note which links to the film." - This is exactly the intention we wanted to get across through using this font type.
Overall, I've learnt that my poster has conveyed the standard short film poster conventions successfully and that my target audience have understand the ideas and theories behind the construction of the poster.

Audience Feedback on Review:

What I have learnt from Melissa's feedback:

1. Our group have followed the standard conventions of layout in order to imitate a LWL's review as Melissa stated that we have used conventions such as; Using an image from our film, used the rating system, name of actors and release date "as well as using layouts from the magazine such as the review on the side and the three digit page number".
2. Melissa informed me that we used language that was engaging to the reader and wasn't patronising. This informed me that our attempt to imitate LWL's review was to a good standard.
When asked how we could improve the review Melissa told me that we should use Century Gothic as a font type on our rating system to help complete the overall layout of the review. Also saying that we could add in more genre and narrative theory. This would make the review sound more knowledgeable.

  1. There is good material here on the film - make sure you add the comments from the lesson last week, and use them to answer the question. Also, don't forget you need to do this for the poster and the review too.
