Little White Lies- Layout conventions- Tasha Reynolds

What are the layout conventions- the design house styles- of Little White Lies?

Software used to create the review articles and page layout- InDesign - Here's a short video showing how a Little White Lies issue is produced.

Standard layout for a film article in Little White Lies magazine-

·         An image taken from the film positioned at the top of the page in the centre; measuring 77mm by 168mm is usually of the lead protagonist from the film.

·         The title of the film is usually centred below the image with a bold text; Century Gothic font

·         Below the name of the film is institutional information; director, actors and release date all written in italic. These are all presented together in a row of three with the factual information written with a bolder font; Aparjita, to make it stand out in contrast to the other institutional information required.

·         The page size is 245mm by 195mm

·         Each page has ‘REVIEWS’ written vertically on the left or right hand side within the margin; this is written in capitals using the font Yahei.

·         The columns which includes the main text about the film are usually in columns from 2 ½ to 3.

·         The estimated number of paragraphs is between 5 to 7 with the word count being around 500 words

·         The first letter of the text at the beginning of the first column is always a capital letter in the font Century Gothic, enlarged so that its size takes up three lines down within the column; known as a Drop cap.

·         Each review ends with the film critics name in the font Aparjita, same as the directors and actors names.

·         Each article has three ratings summing up the success of the film; ANTICIPATION, ENJOYMENT, IN RETROSPECT, beside each of these are number out of a rating of 5 in the font Century Gothic.

·         At the bottom of the page is the page number which is always written with three units e.g. 062.

What’s distinctive about Little White Lies front cover?

·         Each magazine edition has a theme based around a recent release

·         The composition and shot size is a centred close up

·         It includes a celebrity of actor featured from the film

·         The design style is original compared to other magazines as the image is either animated or a piece of artwork one of the designers has drawn

·         The format is displayed with the logo at the top of the cover in the centre. The logo includes the title/name of the magazine ‘Little White Lies’ as well as the issue number/date/price and the barcode. At the bottom of the logo is the tagline “Truth & Movies”; giving the readers an indication of what the magazines main focus and topic is about.

·         The magazine cover doesn’t reveal any content of what’s inside the magazine, so there are no cover lines.

Cover lines:
are short statements found on the cover of the magazine that allude to or describe the articles inside. Their purpose is to entice the reader into picking up and/or buying the magazine.
