Research into FP - 2AM by Maria Beardall

UPDATED

'The lives of four strangers are changed forever when they discover a gruesome murder. Each character has their weaknesses and strengths but they will be put to the test when asked to make a horrible moral choice.'

The film can be viewed here:

  • the title is seen as almost the highest piece of text on the poster, and is attention grabbing in the sense that it looks like a neon sign, which adds a warmness of colour to the poster, and is uniform with the warm tones of the rest of the poster. the titling is slim, and long which adds qualities of sleekness to it
  • the actors and actresses names are seen at the top of the poster, in a white, slim and tall font once again - and the simplicity of the text here adds to the emphasis on the titling
  • the credits are at the bottom of the page, and are much more compact - to keep the attention of the whole piece elsewhere
  • the website at the bottom is in a bolder text to have more attention pulled towards it and perhaps entice the more inquisitive side of the audience
  • the image is dark and highly contrasting to the bright title and white lettering, yet has similar red tones, and the image follows the retro feel that the neon sign instigates
  • the image of the man is particularly interesting as it shows layered and fainter images of the same man in different positions which indicate uncomfortableness, which has been cleverly edited to connote the film is enigma filled and also perhaps plays on the mind and is very tense

MRANG ELEMENTS

Representation:
The representation of this film sees the main character is echoed, and this differentiation in body language shows that the character is very deep in thought and connotes the psychological thriller element of this film. The man changes positions each time in the more faded echoes, which suggests discomfort and also ellipsis - he has been debating in his head for a long time, and enigma rises as it is unknown as to why. This also creates suspicion to if the character is good or bad, is he in trouble? Or is he debating the consequences of starting trouble? The poster creates a curiosity that the audience can't ignore.

Audience:
The audience are 18-28 year olds, and are intrigued and compelled to watch primarily on the enigma factor that is created by the film poster such as from the tag line as 'you never even asked his name' and the general darkness of the post. The youthful side of that demographic will also be curious as the contrast from the neon lights and dark environment outside make the poster bold and vibrant and draws that demographic in. Therefore the audience are drawn in from the enigma as there is a general interest in that category.

Genre:
The red and neon themed poster also connotes the danger of the film, and paints it in a menacing light that suggests something is wrong. The genre of a psychological thriller can be apparent due to this and also the general darkness seen too. The main character also looks on edge which makes the audience feel they should feel tense also, and this in turn creates enigma as it is seemed to be mysterious but threatening. The poster setting of the café also suggests an on edge feel as that setting is typical to odd situations which adds to the enigma.

  1. This is very good analysis on the whole Maria. Can you use some terms to relate to genre theory under Genre? Eg - semantic or syntactic codes; or iconography?
