Research into FP - Room by Maria Beardall

UPDATED
(extra poster above)

'Held captive for seven years in an enclosed space, a woman (Larson) and her 5-year-old son (Tremblay) finally gain their freedom, allowing the boy to experience the outside world for the first time.'

  • the name of the film is below, in the largest type, and is yellow to reflect the autumnal trees seen in the background
  • there are the two main characters in the largest image on the poster, and this showcases the actress and actor and lets the audience create connections to who is in the film and the relations
  • there is extra information which hints the background of the film, as under the title it says 'based on the best selling novel' - this indicates it already has captured a large audience and is worth watching as it has previously been successful in another medium
  • there is then, in smaller, fainter and more 'squashed' lettering details about the cast, directors and also associations of the film
  • at the top of the page is a quote which says 'love knows no boundaries', which connotes the film will have heart warming properties
  • the background is blurred but light with bright colours, with a juxta position as the setting is seen to be outdoors, yet there has been a clever use of 3D structures as the poster seems to be a 3D rectangle - a unique, innovative way to link to the title and the meaning of the film
MRANG ELEMENTS

Representation:
The film can be seen to be represented as a moral, meaningful and empowering message by the use of artistic and calming colours, and has had attention paid to make the poster look more unique and less corporate, for example the addition of dimension to the poster is unusual and therefore suitable for the poster. The use of blue represents sadness for the film yet also a calming aspect; it isn't an adrenaline pumped film, and it correlates with the calm faces of the mother and her child (as assumed) by the facial expressions and close body language. This makes it seem more a film that will pull on the heartstrings and also can be connoted generically that is a film of message and holds a powerful undertone of love, freedom and creating happiness while battling the elements.

Audience:
The audience can be presumably older as the film has more serious notes to it - it has serious issues such as kidnapping and rape, therefore joyful undertones are secluded in that sense, and therefore the audience would be from  25-35 year olds, primarily females as a motherly instinct will mean they can relate more. The film appeals to them as it has adult themes that are happening in the world today and affecting people, and deals with them in a sensitive, thought provoking and inspiring matter, which suits the audience as they will be of the age to be aware of the world and interested in its future.

Genre:
The genre of Room is a drama/thriller, which can't really be seen from the poster, which encourages enigma. The audience can tell drama is included in the film as it holds family properties seen clearly from the main characters, which can hold hints of perhaps narratives such as health issues, long lost family etc, yet keep the audience guessing so they can't be sure. Therefore it has a great juxta position of holding the qualities of the genre through the film poster but also keeps it hidden for an enigma factor that will make the audience curious.
